According to the Centers for Disease Control, it’s estimated that between 1 in 80 and 1 in 240 children in the United States have Autism Spectrum Disorders. The average is 1 in 110. Autism occurs in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, but it is 4 to 5 times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. These statistics translate to two to six children out of every 1,000 have autism. However, there has never been a full population count of all individuals with autism in the United States. Based on estimates, it’s likely that out of four million children born every year in the United States, approximately 24,000 will eventually be diagnosed with some form of autism. Many of these children are not diagnosed until school-age or later. Behaviors related to autism usually appear before the age of 3, therefore it’s important to become aware of the symptoms and make sure individuals are receiving appropriate intervention and treatment as early as possible.
